This is a re-worked painting, originally completed in 2008, and exhibited around town. I thought it was finished, but, no, it turned out that it needed candy ghost alter egos. And now it has them.
Original iteration can be seen here. Comments? Opinions? Better off before? I'd love to hear. No, really, I'm serious!
Blog post title courtesy of the wonderful book by Mary Murphy. Thanks, Mary Murphy!
I've always thought you are one of the best colorists I've seen/known. I think this is just another manifestation of your ability. I also love the idea of ghost candy, but I think the composition of the 1st worked better. I really like the use of negative space, especially in relation to the licorice's gaze. What could be outside of the frame that it was looking at? Something equally as fantastic? A hungry toddler? In this sense, there is a bit of mystery that I liked. All written, it is still another successful painting.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for the comment, Bryan. I really wanted all the negative space initially, but over time, it started to really bug me for some reason, and kinda screamed for further imagery. I think in person, I felt the other space around the figures wasn't engaging enough, whereas photographed, it came out stronger, for a change, actually.
